Invest in your skin. It's going to represent you for a very long time. - Linden Tyler

Have you wondered why certain skin products don't work for you? You may have used products which don't suit your skin type.

Knowing our skin type well helps us take care of it effectively.

There are 6 basic skin types:

1. Normal

2. Dry

3.Oily

4. Combination

5. Sensitive

6. Acne

How to know your skin type?

Open a dry tissue paper and put it on your face few hours after face wash. Press well.

1. If it remains as it is, your skin is ‘normal’.

2. If your skin feels pulled out and uncomfortable, your skin is ‘dry’.

3. If it gets damp or greasy overall, your skin is ‘oily’.

4. If it gets damp at the forehead-nose region (T-Zone) and chin area; whereas normal or dry for rest of the face, your skin is ‘combination’.

Apart from this,

5. If your skin gets red-pink at cheeks, forehead and nose when exposed to sunlight, your skin is ‘sensitive’.

6. If you have acne problem on skin types mentioned above, you have acne prone skin.

Now that you know your skin type, let us tell you how to take care of it.

1. Normal Skin:

Normal skin also known as ‘eudermic’ is a well-balanced skin. It has a balance of natural skin oil and moisture without any sensitivity. Although others must have complimented you for your blessed skin, you still need to provide optimum care to maintain its natural state for many years ahead.

Depending on your skin type, you can choose the most suitable product from a wide range.

However, this does not limit the usage of specific products for skincare. You can combine different types of products like hydrating moisturizers, nourishing masks, face serums and oils. This will enhance the effects and give your skin an incredible glow.

2. Dry Skin:

Dry skin feels pulled out, stretched, dehydrated, itchy, rough and at times flaky. It feels a lot drier during winters. Regular moisturization is a significant aspect of dry skin care. Thick oil based moisturizers, body butters, serums and face oils bring superior results on your skin. Along with that, avoid long hot showers and cleansing your face more than 2 times a day to prevent over drying of skin.

3. Oily Skin:

Oily skin is characterized by shiny, greasy skin, large pores and breakouts. People with oily skin often assume that it needs to be cleansed frequently and does not require any moisturizer. In fact, an oil controlling, mattifying, skin-balancing moisturizer, gel or serum helps in controlling excess oil secretion. This further reduces the occurrence of blackheads, whiteheads or acne by external factors and provides optimum hydration. Use toner to balance the skin pH and to soothe open pores post cleansing.

4. Combination Skin:

Combination skin has some areas which are dry and some which are oily. Usually the forehead-nose (T-zone) and chin area is oily while rest of the face is dry. For some, along with T-zone, some part of the cheeks feels oily while jawline feels dry. The level of oily and dry patches differs from person to person. Some have really oily with normal to slightly dry areas. Some have normal to oily with more drying areas. Some have balanced areas-neither too oily, nor too dry. Care for pores and oil balance along with right amount of hydration for dryness is required for your skin type. Combination masks are good to be applied once a week or 2 times a month to maintain a healthy skin. Light mattifying cleansers, toners, moisturizers, gels and light-weight face oils, serums are friends to your skin which will hydrate your skin optimally.

5. Sensitive Skin:

Sensitive skin is in combination with dry, oily or combination skin type. It easily gets affected by slightest change in temperature. It is more prone to redness, inflammation and allergic reactions. If you have a sensitive skin, you will have to take special care while choosing the right products as the skin easily reacts to strong chemicals and fragrances present in the products. Avoid using scrubs. Go for gentle yet nourishing cleansers, toners, cooling masks and moisturizers which will soothe your skin and avoid breakouts.

6. Acne prone skin:

We generally associate acne with oily skin but dry or combination skin types can also be acne prone. Acne prone skin is sensitive type as well. Clogged pores are the main reason behind it, though people with oily skin are more prone to having acne issues.

There are different causes of acne: teenage, hormonal (at any age), diet, medication, weather related and genetic. Just know this-hormonal acne comes regardless of products used topically but using the right products can reduce its occurrence, its after-effects and avoids spreading it to more region. CTM (Cleansing-Toning-Moisturizing) routine along with using acne treatment products will be beneficial for you. Use acne treating products which are in combination with skin cooling and hydrating ingredients to maintain skin balance. Soothing acne masks also give significant results.

Hope this blog guided you to know your skin better.
